The design team wanted to tell the story of the South before and after the Civil War, and by proxy, the change in spirit of Atlanta before and after the murder of little Mary Phagan. As Leo Frank, the lead character, began to fall deeper into depression, lighting supported the emotional shift by creating a world that was harsher and colder, confining him to his jail cell.
